Author: Richelle Mead
Publisher: Razorbill – Penguin
Release Date: November 13, 2008
Is Rose’s fate to kill the person she loves most? It’s springtime at St. Vladimir’s Academy, and Rose Hathaway is this close to graduation. Since Mason’s death, Rose hasn’t been feeling quite right. She has dark flashbacks in the middle of practice, can’t concentrate in class, and has terrifying dreams about Lissa. But Rose has an even “bigger” secret . . . .She’s in love with Dimitri. And this time, it’s way more than a crush.
Then Strigoi target the academy in the deadliest attack in Moroi history, and Dimitri is taken. Rose must protect Lissa at all costs, but keeping her best friend safe could mean losing Dimitri forever.
I am in love with this series. Richelle Mead never fails to astonish me with plot twists and cliffhangers, and I was absolutely speechless when I finished this book. The intricacies of the character relationships and how everything became much more suspenseful in this installment was amazing!
The romantic relationship between Dimitri and Rose is possibly the best part, other than the action. Without it, the book would be pretty empty, with a lot of fluff, but the romance does not consume the reader’s interest of the book. The interest is also diverted to action, suspense, and sympathy for Rose (who is possibly my favorite heroine of all time).
Rose is sarcastically funny, romantically and emotionally vulnerable, and can kick some serious Strigoi butt. I love her snarky comments; her true feelings, when they’re revealed; and her personality in general, especially because she deals with all of that drama at seventeen years old. Normal high school teenagers, and even some of the paranormally involved ones, have NOTHING to complain about – yet Rose deals with it all and I admire her for it. Her sense of humor at times made me laugh out loud, and with the first person narrative, I felt as though I was privileged enough to be her best friend, someone who she was telling the story to.
The action was also breath-taking. The decisions Rose makes in the heat of the battle, the kills she makes, and everything about her that makes her so hard-core in the vampire community never ceases to amaze me as a reader. Her and Lissa’s relationship also grows in this book, and I can’t wait to see what Richelle Mead has written in the next 3 books. Oh, and the cliff-hanger? Think Silence. I cannot wait to get my hands on Blood Promise, the next installment of The Vampire Academy series.
